Downhillers are a different breed that many people have a hard time calling “cyclists.” Their bikes are often more akin to motorcycles than their urban counterparts, the clothing style and even safety equipment also containing more of a motocross feel. Often sponsored by energy drink companies like Rockstar, Redbull and Monster… this is high energy riding. Adrenaline sports. With the big sponsors come movies that are shot well and edited beautifully.
I doubt the Tour de France would ever have a sponsor like Rockstar (though Rock Racing would be in to it I’m sure), it may be the fact that caffeine is a banned substance during the Tour?
Though it’s unlikely I will ever ride with the likes of Semenuk and Atherton, I will be happy to live vicariously through them and watch the spills, chills, and thrills of their epic trips on the screen. I would love to see a movie showing the lives of these riders and more specifically- what other bikes do they ride? Do they train on road bikes? Ride XC? Cyclocross? Do they commute to the store on a bakfiet? Or do they all ride downhill mountain bikes and then hop on a motocross for the uphill? I’m guessing that Atherton is big into recumbent bikes.
This film premieres today at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey California. Stay tuned for a possible Seattle date.
