Xtracycle sidecar.
This is coming out Fall 2012 from Xtracycle and I gotta say it looks intriguing. With a capacity of 200lbs- it also folds up and out of the way (to get into doorways and the like.) It will retail for $149- though if you want a platform for it- that’ll cost you extra.
If you are carrying something like a keg or boxes or something like that- keeping the load lower on this platform seems like a good idea. I can’t speak to stability while turning, but they’ve hopefully figured all that out.
If you already have an Xtracycle- this looks like it could be a worthy investment. Any Xtracyclers out there have thoughts on it?

Oh, I just might have to get one. Then I’d have an Xtracycle *and* a Maya Cycle Trailer *and* thesidecar. Yup. Get a platform that folds out one more time, put a tarp over it, and I could move right in.

You can already use an xtracycle (+ wide and long loaders) to get your kayak to the water. This is for big loads.

Have had an xcycle for 7 yrs. Almost daily use. This set up will b useful when your often carrying a lot and u want a quiker way to load it all up. Now when I’m schleppin lots of gear it takes a bit to strap it all down. With this, you just secure the big basket/bucket?case, etc. and go.

I’d love to get this for my Surly Big Dummy and use it to haul my dogs to the beach for their daily walk. That is just about the only errand I still have to a car for. Would entail making a few rails/walls for the platform to keep the dogs on board. Also – I’d want to be able to take the thing off quickly and swap it out for my running boards when not hauling dogs.

I used an 18 gallon plastic tub on each side to haul about 200 pounds in groceries. Needed quite a balancing act. With this I could carry just one.

It looks bitchin for sure. Years ago in the 1990′s they had motorcycle sidecar races on a oval dirt track at the Orange County Fairgrounds. I saw many a great race there. The rider in the sidecar is called a monkey. Many a monkey ate shit when they crashed. This could open up cargo bike racing with side cars and monkeys! Pour me a beer as I eat my peanuts and watch some bitchin new racing!

The SideCar will absolutely work with the Sun Atlas Cargo. As I write this, I’m looking at a Sun Atlas (at our HQ) with the SideCar attached and ready to go!

The photo is trying to illustrate the SideCar in the ‘stowed’ and ‘in-use’ positions, so the wheel ‘on top’ is actually just where the SideCar wheel would be when the SideCar was lifted up and stored. The SideCar pivots up and out of the way when not in use, and the SideCar wheel ends up a little higher than the rear deck.

Rob – 100% correct! The SideCar inserts into the ports on the Xtracycle-compatible Atlas, and since the ports are the same on both sides, you can put the SideCar on whichever side you like.

Steve – Good point. That’s definitely something we’re looking at for down the line. For the initial release, it will be more DIY-oriented — the SideCar will come with a template which you can lay down on plywood (or another material) and cut out (or modify and cut out) your loading platform for the SideCar. We are working on designs for decks which customers can purchase, and are considering other features/accessories as part of that process (including some kind of wheel guard). Great comment!

If this works without wobbling like mad or pulling attachment points apart becaues of odd torsional stresses, it would be a near-perfect solution for hauling my very heavy amp and guitar to shows. Right now, I have to use a much tinier mini-amp that sounds weak because my Surly can’t handle the extreme difference in weight that coems from hauling the bigger amp. I will wait to see this in person when it comes out.
